No. 4 - Trio - Polly, Weller and Sam - "Gratitude."

MIDI File

Polly: Please tell me what is gratitude and where it can be found.
Sam: Experience makes me conclude it ain't above the ground.
Weller: You're wrong my boy, a clever man can find it if he looks.
Polly: I'm sure I wish you'd tell me where.
Weller:   Why, in the story books.
Sam & Polly:   That's right, that's right.
Polly: It isn't on earth and it isn't in air.
Sam: If ain't found in bus'ness, to that you can swear.
Weller: It's a thing that you'll none of you meet with in trade.
It's never been born, and it's never been made.
Sam: It's a debt always owing that never gets paid.
It can't live in sunshine and dies in the shade.
Polly: Then what is gratitude, what can it be?
Weller: It's a bloomin' conundrum, take it from me.
Polly: Where, oh where on earth is gratitude?
Sam: No one's found it in this latitude;
Weller: Talking of gratitude's only a platitude.
Polly: Nobody knows where gratitude goes,
Sam: When gratitude some one owes.
All: Where, oh where on earth is gratitude?
No one's found it in this latitude;
Talking of gratitude's only a platitude.
Nobody knows where gratitude goes,
When gratitude some one owes.
Sam: You lend a friend a sovereign and you find you've lost them both.
Weller: Refuse to lend, you've lost your friend; to that I'll take my oath.
Polly: But help a maiden in distress; she'll grateful be, I'm sure.
Sam: You'l find she'll take a second help; then pass her plate for more.
Polly & Weller: That's right, that's right.
Polly: But gratitude surely is met with in some.
Weller: As a very keen notion of favors to come.
Sam: It's a Will-o'-the-Wisp that keeps leading you on,
And just when you want it you find that it's gone.
Polly: It's something you read about, talk about too.
You expect it in others and they do in you.
Sam: It hasn't got body, head, arms, feet or legs.
Weller: It's the extract of nothing boiled down to the dregs.
Polly: Where, oh where on earth is gratitude?
Sam: No one's found it in this latitude;
Weller: Talking of gratitude's only a platitude.
Polly: Nobody knows where gratitude goes,
Sam: When gratitude some one owes.
All: Where, oh where on earth is gratitude?
No one's found it in this latitude;
Talking of gratitude's only a platitude.
Nobody knows where gratitude goes,
When gratitude some one owes.
