No. 9 - Song - Prince Pumpernickel and Chorus

MIDI File

Pumpernickel: Don't talk to me of marriage as if that were bliss personified,
And all that silly nonsense, don't you know?
Of course a girl's not happy till she's safely matrimonified,
And all that silly nonsense, don't you know?
But when she marries poverty the run of romance stops;
The swell set that she used to know her poor acquaintance drops;
(spoken) She wheels the baby carriage too, around the corner shops;
And whispers to the butcher:"Please, a pound of mutton chops."
(sung) Oh, remember this counsel all others above,
Whatever you do, girls, don't marry for love;
And take my advice, oh yes, take my advice,
And marry a chap who possesses the price.
For, for Chink! chink!
Hear the gold and silver clink;
Can any one resist it? "I don't think,"
Oh! the ruler of humanity, both young and old,
Is the music and the glittering of gold, of gold;
A price there is for all things,
From a Duchess to a drink,
And there's nothing in the world like
Chink, chink, chink, chink, chink, chink!
Chorus: Chink! chink! Hear the gold and silver clink;
And there's nothing in the world like
Chink, chink, chink, chink, chink, chink!

Pumpernickel: A promenade by moonlight, girls, is pleasant; oh excessively,
And all that foolish rubbish, don't you know?
You spoon and sigh and look into each other's eyes expressively,
And all that stupid twaddle, don't you know?
Papa comes down the stairway; you are in a horrid plight,
He has his heavy boots on; how that young man shakes with fright.
(spoken) Papa meets him in the hallway; raises him about this height,
That youth lands on the sidewalk as if struck with dynamite.
(sung) Now my dears, waste no time in flirtations like this;
Or some good opportunities surely you'll miss.
If you're rich you can marry for title and rank,
If you're poor, first find out what he has in the bank.
For, for Chink! chink!
Hear the gold and silver clink;
Can any one resist it? "I don't think,"
Oh! the ruler of the universe, as we've been told,
Is the glamor and the potency of gold, of gold;
A price there is for all things,
From a Duchess to a drink,
And there's nothing in the world like
Chink, chink, chink, chink, chink, chink!
Chorus: Chink! chink! Hear the gold and silver clink;
And there's nothing in the world like
Chink, chink, chink, chink, chink, chink!
