No. 19 - Duet - Betty and Gerard - "Dance with me."

MIDI File

Betty: It's a month since we parted,
Aren't you quite broken-hearted?
Gerard: Not a bit of it!
Not a bit of it!
I've contrived to exist.
Betty: Oh, I'm sure I don't doubt you,
Gerard: Yes, I've managed without you;
Betty: Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
I'm so glad I've been missed.
Still, for tonight, you might be polite.
Dance with me!
Gerard: But I really would rather not,
Betty: Oh, I'm sorry, I quite forgot
That you want to avoid me, that is why;
Still, dance with me,
Gerard: Very well, if it pleases you,
We will just have a turn or two,
Both: For the sake of the days gone by!

Betty: Once I hoped, when you met me,
You would never forget me.
Gerard: That was long ago,
Very long ago.
Betty: Ah, don't try to explain.
Gerard: Yes, we've both lived in clover,
But those days are now over.
Betty: Are you sure of it?
Really sure of it?
We might start once again.
Is it too late? Ah, why should we wait?
Dance with me!
Gerard: Well, I must, since you beg me so,
Betty: It seems rather absurd, you know,
That we shouldn't be friendly, you and I.
Oh, dance with me,
Gerard: Very well, if it pleases you,
We will just have a turn or two,
Both: For the sake of the days gone by!
