No. 10 - Chorus, Scene and Duet - Laski and General

MIDI File

Chorus: It is time for the King
To behold the fair Princess,
As the chime soon will ring
Their espousals to express!
For if they never meet,
It will clearly not be right
When we say Oh! how sweet!
That they fell in love at sight!
Girls: When a royal pair are lovers,
Each at once the fact discovers,
Clear from any doubts or vapours,
So it's stated in the papers.
As the two exchange their greetings,
It's a case of lovers' meetings,
Cupid lighting tapers,
As you'll read in all the papers.
General: Where is the King?
We have arranged it nicely,
He falls in love at ten fifteen precisely.
Laski: Help! Help!
General: What's now upon the cards?
Another case of ragging in the Guards.
Laski: Brandy! a drink for Heaven's sake I ask!
Ah, Gen'ral! You always have a flask.
Chorus: What's happened to the King?
What's happened to the King?
What's happened to the King?
Come, tell us ev'ry thing.
Laski: The King was standing by the brim
Of yonder stream unruffled,
When suddenly there sprang on him
Three men with faces muffled!
He'd not a moment to retreat
From their adroitly placed band;
Two took his head, and two his feet,
The other two his waistband.
Chorus: Two took his head, and two his feet,
The other two his waistband.
General: That's more than three!
Laski: Don't bother me!
I saw them seize his waistband.
Chorus: Two took his head, and two his feet,
The other two his waistband.
Laski: Now I was standing near my lord,
At least at no great distance;
I promptly drew my trusty sword
And rushed to his assistance;
A dozen wild and wicked men
Their blows upon me showered.
I cut down six and wounded ten
And then was overpowered!
General: Sixteen or more?
Laski: No, thirty-four!
And I was overpowered!
So while insensible I lay
I heard the wretches shouting,
We mean to take the King away
For just a four days' outing
We'll teach him how to rule the land —
And then I woke — Oh, Heaven!
The King was gone, and all the band,
Ferocious forty-seven!
General: How many now?
Laski: Well, anyhow I counted quite eleven!
Chorus: The King was gone, and all the band,
Ferocious forty-seven!
Follow the track! Bring the king back!
Vengeance on villany bold and black!
Search for the band over the land,
Rescue the soverrign they've trepanned!
Follow the track!
If we should come upon one of the gang,
Tear him to pieces or shoot him or hang!
Death is the doom for his daring attack —
Follow the track! Follow the track!
