No. 1 - Opening Choru

MIDI File

Customers: We will be quick and do our shopping,
Never stopping, never stopping,
While we may —
It is Saturday,
When the Stores
Have to shut their doors!
Each one has made a little list out,
Nothing missed out, nothing missed out,
Where we write
Down in black and white
All we need
Very much indeed!
So no delay,
We cannot stay,
For this is their half holiday!
We must look at the Russian sables,
For if we wait they will be gone!
Assistant: Third floor, straight on!
Customers: We want cloths for our dinner tables,
Artistic patterns, strong and white!
Assistant: Fourth floor and right!
Customers:

We would choose amusing toys
For girls and boys
O of three or four!

Assistant: That's down one floor!
Customers: And have you goods reduced in price,
But very nice
And rich and rare?
Assistant: Try here, and there, and anywhere!
Customers: We will be quick and do our shopping,
Never stopping, never stopping,
While we may —
It is Saturday,
When the Stores Have to shut their doors!
So no delay, Away! Away!
For this is their half holiday!

Girls: We have got Just an hour or so —
How on earth are we to employ it?
Could you not very well employ it,
Looking at what They have to show?
Let us view Anything that's new,
And we hope the staff will enjoy it!
We'll take a look at all the lot,
All the lot, all the lot!
But we will not attempt to buy —
We'll look and try, but never buy!
Assistant: May we show a dress,
French and neatly fitting?
Girls: Oh yes! oh yes!
But let's sit down — no charge for sitting!
Oh! that is chic! Fits like a glove!
That's the style I love!
I got one just the other week!
Assistant: In hats we have a fine selection!
Girls: That is the thing,
If you will bring Some for inspection!
Ah! look at that! A lovely hat!
The nicest I ever have seen!
But already I've got sixteen!
Assistant: Do you want hair in curls or switches?
Mattresses, ladies' riding breeches?
Pianolas, petticoats, or Quaker oats,
Or tennis sets, or cigarettes?
Enamel chains, or aeroplanes?
Precious stones, gramophones?
Cauliflowers, paperweights,
Or bromide plates,
A telescope, a cake of soap!
Girls: Well, we really cannot say —
We'll look in another day!
Full Chorus: Garrods! Garrods; it's undisputed
You can go there for
All you care for!
Garrods! Garrods! you will be suited,
Pay your money and take your choice!
Ladies: For they will do your hair —
Up the revolving stair —
Tickets for trips,
Railways or ships!
Shampoo or tub,
Feminine club!
Massage for either sex,
Bank where they cash your cheques!
All: Theatre stalls,
Brougham for calls,
Ev'rything's found at Garrod's!
Men: And if a lady you would meet,
It's better here than in the street!
All: For while you choose a Paris skirt,
There's always time to flirt!
Garrods! Garrods!
If you are lacking
Whiting or blacking,
Lace or sacking —
Garrods! Garrods!
all things are there!
Brooches, Coaches, Tresses of hair,
Roses, Cosies, Silk underwear —
Ev'rything for ev'ry body!
Ev'rywhere!
