No. 8 - Song - Genie and Chorus - "Rub the Lamp"
Lyrics by Geo. Grossmith, Jnr.

MIDI File

Genie: Oh, the lamp which used to gladd'n
Once the heart of young Aladd'n
Still is shining, no more reclining
In an Oriental cavern,
Like an exhibition tavern,
Or a grotto at a fancy fair;
And if e'er by fate's concession
It should fall in your possession,
It's no fiction, apply some friction,
And if aught you be desiring
Or you fancy you're requiring,
You will find your little fancy there.
You rub the lamp.
Chorus: Don't you rub it very hard,
Genie: But rub the lamp.
Chorus: Needn't do it more than once.
Genie: If you should want to write to mother
And you can't afford a stamp,
Don't sit and cry,
Chorus: It's a silly thing to do!
Genie: Don't try and die,
Chorus: There'll be time enough for that.
Genie: Oh, don't you drink that nasty poison,
Rub the lamp.
Chorus: (spoken) Rub it quick, You rub the lamp.
Genie: Don't you rub it very hard,
Chorus: But rub the lamp.
Genie: Needn't do it more than once.
Chorus: If you should want to write to mother
And you can't afford a stamp,
Don't sit and cry,
Genie: It's a silly thing to do!
Chorus: Don't try and die,
Genie: There'll be time enough for that.
Chorus: And don't you drink that nasty poison,
Rub the lamp, (spoken) Rub it quick!

Genie: When you havn't got the ready
For some boots for little Freddy,
And the baby is hungry may be,
And replenishing the larder
Is each day becoming harder
Then the lamp may very useful be.
If you're fishing or you're yachting,
Or you go out lobster potting
On the briny, so cool and shiny,
Then there comes a lurch abnormal,
You, in manner quite informal,
Make acquaintance with the deep blue sea.
You rub the lamp.
Chorus: Don't you rub it very hard,
Genie: But rub the lamp.
Chorus: Needn't do it more than once.
Genie: If you should fall into the water
And you get a touch of cramp,
Don't try and swim.
Chorus: For it's such a waste of time!
Genie: Don't sing a hymn,
Chorus: You might sing it out of tune.
Genie: And don't waste money on the lifeboat,
Rub the lamp,
Chorus: (spoken) Rub it quick, You rub the lamp.
Genie: Don't you rub it very hard,
Chorus: But rub the lamp.
Genie: Needn't do it more than once.
Chorus: If you should fall into the water
And you get a touch of cramp,
Don't try and swim.
Genie: For it's such a waste of time!
Chorus: Don't sing a hymn,
Genie: You might sing it out of tune.
Chorus: And don't waste money on the lifeboat,
Rub the lamp, (spoken) Rub it quick!
