St. Gertrude

(6.5., 12 lines)

Published in " The Musical Times" , Novello, December 1871.

1 Onward, Christian soldiers,   2 At the sign of triumph
    Marching as to war,       Satan's host doth flee;
  With the Cross of Jesus     On then, Christian soldiers,
    Going on before.       On to victory!
  Christ the Royal Master,     Hell's foundations quiver
    Leads against the foe;       At the shout of praise;
  Forward into battle     Brothers, lift your voices,
    See, His banners go.       Loud your anthems raise.

Onward, Christian soldiers,
  Marching as to war,
With the Cross of Jesus
  Going on before!

Onward, Christian soldiers,
  Marching as to war,
With the Cross of Jesus
  Going on before!

3 Like a mighty army   4 Crowns and thrones may perish,
    Moves the Church of God;       Kingdoms rise and wane,
  Brothers, we are treading     But the Church of Jesus
    Where the saints have trod.       Constant will remain.
  We are not divided,     Gates of hell can never
    All one body we,       'Gainst that Church prevail;
  One in hope and doctrine,     We have Christ's own promise,
    One in charity.       And that cannot fail.

Onward, Christian soldiers,
  Marching as to war,
With the Cross of Jesus
  Going on before!

Onward, Christian soldiers,
  Marching as to war,
With the Cross of Jesus
  Going on before!

5 Onward then, ye people!
    Join our happy throng;
  Blend with ours your voices
    In the triumph song:
  Glory, laud, and honour
    Unto Christ the King!
  This through countless ages
    Men and angels sing.

Onward, Christian soldiers,
  Marching as to war,
With the Cross of Jesus
  Going on before! Amen.
