THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Sydney Ashcroft (1908-09)

Sydney Ashcroft joined the chorus at the Savoy in November 1908 during the Second Repertory Season, assuming the small role of the Second Citizen in The Yeomen of the Guard in March 1909 when that opera as added for the last month of the season.

His only other appearance in a named part on the London Stage was also at the Savoy, when he appeared as François in Guy Eden and Reginald Somerville’s comic opera The Mountaineers (September-November 1909). This was not a D’Oyly Carte production—the Savoy being under the management of C. Herbert Workman. Ashcroft also understudied, and occasionally replaced, Workman in the leading role of Pierre.
