THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Josephine Ashley (1925-26)

[Born Lamorbey, Sidcup, Kent 17 Nov 1902, died Netherbury, Dorset 28 Sep 1981]

Josephine Viola Ashley Lumby joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company as a soprano chorister in March 1925. During the 1925-26 season she took on the small roles of Chloe in Princess Ida, and Lady Ella in Patience (which she assumed in December 1925 with the departure of Irene Hill).

She gave up both roles at the start of the 1925-26 season, though she did substitute on occasion as Chloe, before leaving the Company in December on the eve of its 21-week tour of Canada.
