THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Florence Bemister as Lady Psyche in Princess Ida

Florence Bemister (1882-83)

[Born Hampshire 1865]

Adele Lucia Florence Bemister was engaged to play Fleta with D'Oyly Carte's Second American Iolanthe Company at the Lyceum Theatre, Philadelphia, for six weeks beginning December 5, 1882. It was her only appearance with a D'Oyly Carte Company, however, in 1884 she appeared in the Carte-sanctioned New York production of Princess Ida, at the Fifth Avenue Theatre, where she took the role of Lady Psyche.

Miss Bemister continued to appear in New York comic opera playbills for the next few years:her last recorded appearance being in the title role in a James C. Duff revival of Iolanthe in May and June 1887, at the Standard Theatre. The cast included Lillian Russell and J. H. Ryley.

Her sister, soprano Ada Bemister, also appeared with the D'Oyly Carte, in Britain as a chorister and on the continent as Patience and Yum-Yum.
