THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

(Miss) Oscar Byrne (1883)

Miss Oscar Byrne, whose full name was Kate Oscar Byrne (nee Kathleen Byrne), was educated at Highgate Convent and at the Royal Academy of Music. Her first professional stage appearance was as Joe in Bleak House with Mrs. Hermann Vezin.

She appeared briefly as the Queen of the Fairies with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 2 "Iolanthe" Company during February 1883. She succeeded Fanny Harrison who had transferred to the No. 1 "Iolanthe" Company. Later that month, Miss Oscar Byrne was herself replaced in the role by Isabelle Muncey.

She left the D'Oyly Carte to join the Standard Opera Company in South Africa, but was back in Great Britain in 1886 touring a comic opera called Vetah with Kate Santley.
