THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Mattie Danielle

Mattie Danielle (1880-81)

In the summer of 1877 the Emily Soldene English Opera Company was in San Francisco. There they engaged a local singing actress nemed Mattie Daniel before heading off to New Zealand and Australia. Intitially a chorister, roles down under included Javotte in La Fille de Madame Angot, Orestes in La Belle Helene, the Countess in Madame l'Archiduc, and the title role in Genevieve de Brabant. She eventually returned to chorus duty which presumably included that of a bridesmaid in Trial by Jury. She left the Soldene Company in Spring of 1878, but remained in Australia, performing there into the following year.

Mattie Danielle, as she was to be known, made what was billed as "her first appearance in America" as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance at the gala opening of Halleck's Alhambra, Boston, in July 1880 (a non-D'Oyly Carte production but one with Carte's blessing). She next appeared as Edith in a D'Oyly Carte Pirates Company that toured the eastern North America beginning in September 1880. She left the cast in January 1881.

In 1884-85, Miss Danielle toured as prima donna with the Kimball Opera Company, starring as Bettina in The Mascotte.
