THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

James M. Glover

James M. Glover (1881, 1882)

[Born Dublin 18 Jun 1861, died Hastings, Sussex 8 Sep 1931]

James M. Glover toured briefly as a chorister in Scotland in H.M.S. Pinafore with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "A" Company in January 1881. He also toured for a spell with Carte's "B" Company in Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance in 1882.

Glover would spend the rest of his life in the theatre, as a performer, conductor, manager (Theatre Royal, Plymouth), and author ("The Theatre Managers' Handbook"). He wrote an autobiography, "Jimmy Glover--His Book" in 1911, and during the 1920s, and right up until his death in 1931, wrote a weekly column in The Stage, "The Music Box." His columns in The Stage, written many years after his D'Oyly Carte experience, provide sketchy details of his tours with the Company.
