THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Pauline Howard as Mad Margaret in Ruddigore

Pauline Howard (1947-49)

[Born Durham c.1927]

Joyce Pauline Howard joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in October 1947. She took her first named parts, filling in for Marian Smith as Pitti-Sing in The Mikado and Mad Margaret in Ruddigore, when that lady was ill in the winter of 1948-49, and assumed the parts of Kate in The Pirates of Penzance, Mad Margaret, and Vittoria in The Gondoliers when Miss Smith left the cast in April 1949. During the spring or summer of 1949, Miss Howard took on Fleta in Iolanthe (replacing Valda Darling). She also understudied principal soubrette Joan Gillingham that season, appearing for her on occasion as Edith in The Pirates of Penzance, Lady Angela in Patience, Iolanthe in Iolanthe, and Pitti-Sing. Pauline Howard left the Company in July 1949.
