THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

May Lennox (1879-81, 1884-85)

[Born c.1868]

May Lennox arrived in New York on November 11, 1879, along with the principal members of D'Oyly Carte's First American H.M.S. Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance Company, which opened at the Fifth Avenue Theatre on December 1. Presumably a chorister and understudy in New York, Miss Lennox took her first named part in Philadelphia as Edith in Pirates with Carte's Second American Pirates Company, February 9-April 10, 1880. She did not have a princpal role when the Company took up H.M.S. Pinafore, April 12-May 1. The following year she was with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "C" Company in England, filling in briefly as Kate in Pirates in June 1881. Miss Lennox later toured with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "A" ("Princess Ida" No. 2) Company as Chloe (February-December 1884) and Sacharissa (September 1884, and January-December 1885).

In between her D'Oyly Carte tours, Miss Lennox created the role of Prudence in Stephens & Solomon's comic opera Claude Duval at London's Olympic Theatre, August-October 1881.
