THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Arthur Mansfield (1889-91)

[Born Middlesex, died Pancras 19361880]

Rollins and Witts tell us that Arthur Edward Mansfield was the "Drummer Boy" for the first production of The Gondoliers at the Savoy, December 1889-June 1891. The "Drummer Boy" was a juvenile supernumerary who appeared on stage during the second act. The part never appeared in the dramatis personæ in the Savoy program and was almost surely shared by several youngsters during the run.
