Guy Matthews (1974-82)

[Born Bournemouth]

Guy Matthews attended an all-boys school near Bournemouth where he made his Gilbert & Sullivan debut at age 14 as Yum-Yum in The Mikado. He would later play principal tenor roles with amateur societies, before joining the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in September 1974. He served in the chorus until the Company shut down in February 1982, filling in on occasion as First Yeoman (1975-79) and Leonard Meryll (1980-81) in The Yeomen of the Guard.

Matthews was in a production of The Pirates of Penzance in Perth, Scotland, in September 1987. He served in the chorus of the "New" D'Oyly Carte Opera Company for its initial season of Iolanthe and The Yeomen of the Guard in 1988, and later appeared in The Phantom of the Opera in 1989.
