Lily Matthews (1890-1905)

[Born London c.1871]

Lily Matthews was a mezzo-soprano chorister and small part player with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "B" from January 1890 to December 1896. Her named parts those years were Fiametta (January-December 1891) and Tessa (substituting, May 1890 and October 1891) in The Gondoliers, Kalee in The Nautch Girl (December 1891-June 1892), Cynthia in The Vicar of Bray (July 1892-April 1893 and January-December 1896), the Lady Angela in Patience (briefly, October 1893), Melene in Utopia Limited (February 1894-February 1895), Zitella in The Chieftain (February-August 1895), and Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore (briefly, March 1895).

Miss Matthews then toured South Africa as a D'Oyly Carte chorister (December 1896-June 1897), returning to Southport in July. She soon transferred to D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "C," where, over the next four years, she served in the chorus, making occasional appearances in the named parts of Melene in Utopia (December 1897 and March 1898) and the Lady Saphir in Patience (March 1900). She appears to have left the D'Oyly Carte organization and Company "C" in 1905.
