Elsie McDermid as Patience in Patience

Elsie McDermid (1914-17)

[Born Middlesbrough 19 Jul 1889, died Eston, North Yorkshire 2 May 1933]

Elsie Maybelle McDermid made her London Stage debut as a Flower Maiden in Parsifal at Covent Garden in 1914 before joining the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company as principal soprano in December of that year, replacing Clara Dow.

Between December 1914 and June 1917 she appeared as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Patience in Patience, Phyllis in Iolanthe, Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Casilda in The Gondoliers, and (from December 1914 to June 1915 only) Kate in The Yeomen of the Guard.

In 1920 Miss McDermid returned to the Covent Garden, appearing that year in Pelleas et Melisande, Louise, and Gianni Schicchi. She was later in The Magic Flute (Old Vic, 1922), Gianni Schicchi (Covent Garden, 1926), and Rigoletto (Covent Garden, 1927).
