THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Gladys Sinclair as Lady Psyche in Princess Ida

Gladys Sinclair (1917-22)

Soprano Gladys Sinclair made her first appearance on the London Stage as an extra in a Christmas "adventure," The Cockyolly Bird, at the Little Theatre (December 1914-January 1915).

She joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company chorus in December 1917, and served with the Repertory Company until April 1922. She is most closely associated with the role of Lady Psyche in Princess Ida, a role she held from December 1918 until June 1921. She also appeared for a time (December 1918-March 1919) as Kate in The Yeomen of the Guard, but yielded that part when Elsie Griffin joined the Company. As understudy to principal sopranos, Miss Sinclair filled in on occasion as Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore (1918-19), Phyllis in Iolanthe, Psyche, and Gianetta in The Gondoliers (all 1921-22).
