THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Jesse Smith (1881, 1884-85)

Jesse Smith was a chorister and small part player on tour with at least three D'Oyly Carte companies between August 1881 and December 1885. His first named parts were Policeman X in Quite an Adventure (Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "D" Company, August-December 1881), Napoleon Fitz-Stubbs in A Private Wire (Carte's "C" Company, March-July 1884), and Mr. Bunthorne's Solicitor in Patience ("E" Company, July 1884-May 1885). From September to December 1885 he was with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "C" (Repertory) Company:appearing as the Usher in Trial by Jury and the Notary in The Sorcerer. They were his last roles with the D'Oyly Carte organization.

Smith continued singing (both theatre and music hall) through the 1890s, including a turn as Elvino di Pasta on tour in Gilbert & Cellier's The Mountebanks.
