Soprano Jane Bridget Stanford played Yum-Yum in a school production of The Mikado in her native Leicester, then spent six years at the Royal College of Music, before joining the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in January 1979. She remained with the Company until its closure in February 1982, taking her first named part (Giulia in The Gondoliers) in October 1979. She added Zorah when Ruddigore was revived in February 1981, and Kate in The Yeomen of the Guard in September 1981, following the departure of Janet Henderson. She also filled in on occasion as Aline in The Sorcerer (1980-81), Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance (1980-81), and Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard (1980-82).

In 1986 she appeared in a production of Evita in Manchester with several former D'Oyly Carters, including her husband, baritone Peter James-Robinson.
