John Torney

John Torney (1935-36)

John Anthony Torney first appeared before the public in Gilbert & Sullivan as Nanki-Poo in The Mikado with the Bangor Operatic Society in 1928. After further musical training and a brief concert career he joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, serving as tenor chorister from May 1935 to February 1936.

Torney later sang with the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company, appearing in 1943 at London's Winter Garden Theatre in La Traviatta (Alfred Germont), Madame Butterfly (Lieutenant Pinkerton), Rigoletto (Duke of Mantua), La Boheme (Rudolph), Faust (Faust), and The Merry Wives of Windsor (Fenton). His operatic career lasted until at least 1949, when he was on tour with the Imperial Opera Company.
