THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Maisie Turner (1894-95)

[Born Houston, Texas 16 Jan 1876, died Staines, Surrey Jan 1903]

Maisie Turner's first role with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company was Phylla with D'Oyly Carte's American Utopia Limited Company in New York and Boston, between March and June 1894. If she returned to England and joined the newly-formed D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "A" (as many in the American Utopia Company did), it cannot be proven. Phylla was for some reason not in the Company "A" cast lists.

She eventually transferred to D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "D," appearing with them from at least October 1895. In November she assumed the roles of Lady Psyche in Princess Ida and Princess Kalyba in Utopia Limited, but when the Company "D" tour ended on December 14, 1895, her D'Oyly Carte career may have ended as well.

Miss Turner took her only role on the London Stage a few years later:as Henriette in the operatic farce The Prince of Borneo (Strand, October-November 1899). She also performed in music hall until at least May 1902. She died less than a year later at just 27 years of age.
