John Whitney Took up professional singing fairly late in life, appearing as a vocalist in the 1871 census for the first time. He was nearly sixty when, as a touring chorister, he first appeared with the Mr. D'Oyly Carte's No. 1 "Iolanthe" Company in 1884. He later served on Carte's Second Continental tour in 1887, and with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "B" in 1889, 1890 and 1891.
