THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Marie Wynter (1882-85)

From December 1882 to July 1883 Marie Wynter (born Mary Jane Keane) toured as Jacintha and the Third Lieutenant with Carte's "Rip Van Winkle" Company, then joined D'Oyly Carte's "Pinafore" and "Pirates" Company where, between December 1883 and February 1884, she shared the role of Kate in The Pirates of Penzance with Emma Gwynne, and played Mrs. Wranglebury in the companion piece Mock Turtles.

When the "Pinafore" and "Pirates" Company was disbanded in February 1884, Miss Wynter joined Carte's newly-formed "A" ("Princess Ida" No. 2) Company as Lady Psyche. (She also filled in on at least one occasion in July 1884 in the title role.) When "A" Company added The Sorcerer to its repertoire in January 1885, she took on Constance in that opera and Bella Bellingham in the Desprez & Solomon "vaudeville" Round & Square. She appears to have left the D'Oyly Carte when "A" Company disbanded in December 1885.

Miss Wynter was married to D'Oyly Carte business manager E. J. Benbrook.
