No. 25 - Duet - Marie and Alexis - "Love and Duty?"
Alexis: | Twixt me and you No throne shall intervene, I'll win and woo The woman, not the Queen, My love shall be your treasury, My arm the sceptre where your hand shall lean. |
Marie: | I may not reign With your true heart for throne, My way is plain, My fate is not my own, I must await a kingly mate And lose the sweetest thing my life has known. |
Alexis: | Love or duty, crown or kiss, Poison'd pomp or passion's sway, Regal rank or lover's bliss, Which of these shall win the day? |
Marie: | Since there lies no middle way Twixt "I must not!" and "I may!" Then my answer must be this, Duty wins and love must pay. |
Alexis: | Ah, count the cost! A throne is little worth If love be lost Whose kingdom is the earth! Princess, beware, take care, take care Lest love should break the heart that gave him birth! |
Marie: | Oh, tempt me not From duty's storm and stress To change my lot For humble happiness! The world I'd give to love and live And peasant wife in place of great Princess! |
Alexis: | Bitter strife of yea and nay. |
Marie: | Queenly crown and clinging kiss. |
Both: | Can there be no end but this? Ah, the price that love must pay. |
