No. 19 - Act III Opening Chorus
Tenors: | The morning breaks upon the shore And toil once more awakes. The dark is done and with the sun Must ev'ry one embark! Spread out the net and then Fishermen away! In the leaping spray There is bread to get For the home today. |
All men: | No longer in lazy slumber lie — In the Eastern sky Now dawn is high, Once more to sea away Before the sun is stronger. The morning breaks upon the shore And toil once more awakes. |
Girls: | The guards, we're told, Are here on duty, Our heroes bold The harbour quay they hold! They'll face the foe, we know, And lay him low If he should give them any chance of doing so! But sons of Mars Are fond of beauty, And love beguiles Their labours now and then. We'll give them some cigars To smoke on sentry duty, And cheer with charming smiles Our gallant soldier men. |
Soldiers: | We are a regiment who never are afraid If any enemies invade our land! So long as they do not appear, We never show the slightest fear For we are at our post and here We stand! And when attractive maidens look at us and smile Our weary watching to beguile awhile, We feel no longer faint, But fresh as paint — No service seems too hard For a gallant guard. |
