No. 1 - Opening Chorus

MIDI File

Girls: In Ylang Ylang where the ruby river
Rolls its billows under the willows
Gracefully a-shiver.
Where the blossoms hang
And the swallows twitter,
Ladies handle tea and scandal
Mild and never bitter.
Kitchen tea and naughty slang
Do not vex Ylang Ylang,
Do not vex Ylang Ylang.

  In Ylang Ylang, any one who smart is
Gathers daily to our daily
Tea and gossip parties.
Muffin and meringue
Western maids may swallow —
In our borders, beauty orders
Tea and nought to follow.
Cake and crumpet may go hang
Out in far Ylang Ylang,
Out in far Ylang Ylang.

  Hi, hi! Mi mi! Tea, tea for me.
Hi, hi! Mi mi! Tea, tea for me.

Mi Mi: From the dawn till night is falling
Chinese maids for tea are calling.
'Tis the universal tipple
Sipp'd with sighs or laughter's ripple.
Western ladies o'er the sea
But little know the use of tea.
Girls: But little know the use of tea.
Mi Mi: When the minstrel comes a-wooing,
That's the time you start a-brewing;
When you hear his pink-a-pongo,
Then you sip a little Congo;
When of love he starts to vapour
Then you take a cup of Caper;
When your waist he tries to seek-O,
Then you try a little Pekoe.
And when he steals a kiss, a nice 'un,
That's the time you fly to Hyson.
Girls: And when he steals a kiss, a nice 'un,
That's the time you fly to Hyson.
Ha, ha! Ha, ha! Ha, ha! Ha, ha! Ha, ha!
In Ylang Ylang, any one who smart is
Gathers daily to our daily
Tea and gossip parties.
Muffin and meringue
Western maids may swallow —
In our borders, beauty orders
Tea and nought to follow.
Cake and crumpet may go hang
Out in far Ylang Ylang,
Out in far Ylang Ylang.

Mi Mi: List, list, list!
The guns are sounding loud and fast.
'Tis Admiral Hi Lung come back at last.

Men: Yo ho! for the bounding ocean,
Yo ho! for the rolling seas.
We scorn its heaving motion
And walk the decks with ease.
Girls: They are our Royal sailors,
Returning from their trip;
No cowards they or quailors,
They love their gallant ship.
Men: Yo ho! for the jib and spanker,
We're safe in port again;
So drop the two ton anchor
And pull away to shore.
Ensemble: Yo ho! for the bounding ocean,
Yo ho! for the rolling seas.
We scorn its heaving motion
And walk the decks with ease.
They've reef'd the jib,
They've reef'd the jib and spanker,
And down the ladder pour
For home sweet home they hanker,
And leap again to shore and leap again,
And leap again to shore.
Mi Mi: Clear a passage through the throng,
Clear for Admiral Hi Lung.

Hi Lung: A year today I sailed away across the briny blue;
With business for the Emperor, which only I could do.
I used to try and cast my eye upon a lady grand,
A lady who was worthy to accept a monarch's hand.
Chorus: A lady who was worthy to accept a monarch's hand.
Hi Lung: And roly poly, roly poly, o'er the sea I sail'd,
Here and there and ev'rywhere
Where great big waves prevail'd,
And east and west I tried my best to bag a likely lot,
But roly poly, roly poly, that was all I got.
Chorus: And roly poly, roly poly, o'er the sea he sail'd,
Here and there and ev'rywhere
Where great big waves prevail'd,
And east and west he tried his best to bag a likely lot,
But roly poly, roly poly, that was all he got.

Hi Lung: A year today I sailed away and now I'm back on land
Without a bride to sit beside the Emperor's right hand.
For punishment I shall be sent once more to sea, I know,
And that is why I heave a sigh because I dread to go.
Chorus: And that is why he heaves a sigh because he dreads to go.
Hi Lung: It's roly poly, roly poly, o'er the sea once more,
Here and there and ev'rywhere where angry billows roar.
Some admirals at court have pals and quit the sea when young,
But it's roly poly and nothing else for Admiral Hi Lung.
Chorus: It's roly poly, roly poly, and nothing else more,
Here and there and ev'rywhere where angry billows roar.
Some admirals at court have pals and quit the sea when young,
But it's roly poly and nothing else for Admiral Hi Lung.
