Sources of Grand Duke Scores
You can purchase copies of Grand Duke scores from the following locations. They offer e-mail ordering, and shipment to anywhere in the world.
- Chappells of Bond Street, now at 152-160 Wardour Street, carry the scores for all 13 G&S operas and are willing to ship them anywhere in the world. Their telephone number is +44(0) 20 7432 4400.
- D'Oyly Carte Opera Company — The music hire library has available full orchestra sets for Grand Duke.
- Marc Shepherd's Vocal Score of The Grand Duke. New Edition of the vocal score of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Grand Duke. Marc has now completed the revisions of his score. It is available in two versions: the "full" version, with introduction and critical apparatus and a performer's edition which omits these. Both versions can be had as free downloads from Lulu, or they can be ordered printed and bound.
- Opus 1 Music — Exclusive North American agents for rental of "The Newby Scores" of the 13 G&S operas. The arrangements are scored for as few as 12 or 13 instrumentalists (or as many as the music director cares to include) and still maintain a balanced, artistic accompaniment. The "Newby Scores" have been used all over the English-speaking world.
- Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society — Offers a brand new computer (Finale) engraving of the orchestra parts for The Grand Duke, based on the D'Oyly Carte band parts of the 1896 premiere. It is not an academic "critical edition," but every effort has been made to make this score as accurate and complete as possible. A conductor's full score (with vocal lines) and a "reworked" version of the Chappell piano/vocal score (correcting errors and adding the full dialogue) are also available, as are a 3-disc CD set and a VHS tape of their performance using this orchestration. For full details see their website.
