THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Adrienne Andean (1908-09, 1912)

[Born Stapleton 11 Dec 1879, died Mansfield 23 Jan 1967]

Adrienne Beatrice Andean was a prominent amateur mezzo for several years before turning professional. Her stage roles in her native Bristol included Phoebe Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard, Blush of Morning in The Rose of Persia, Molly in The Emerald Isle, the May Queen in Merrie England, and Joy in A Princess of Kensington.

Miss Andean was a member of the Savoy chorus for the Second Repertory Season (April 1908-March 1909). In December 1908 she took the named part of Gwenny Davis in the "curtain raiser" A Welsh Sunset when it was revived with The Pirates of Penzance. She added the small part of Giulia in The Gondoliers when that opera was added to the Repertory in January 1909. She understudied Jessie Rose in principal mezzo parts, but was only called upon to substitute once—as Pitti Sing in the Act II finale of The Mikado on the evening of October 10, 1908.

She joined the D’Oyly Carte Principal Repertory Company on tour at some point after the Savoy season, though it is unclear when. She was with the Company on tour in April 1912.

Her brother Richard also performed with D'Oyly Carte at the Savoy and (briefly) on tour in 1906-07.
