THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Ethel Armit in The Mikado

Ethel Armit (1911-16)

[Born Broughty Ferry, Scotland 20 Apr 1881, died Edinburgh 19 Mar 1960]

Soprano Ethel Ritchie Armit was a member of the D’Oyly Carte Principal Repertory Opera Company chorus from 1911-1916. In the 1911-12 and 1912-13 seasons she also played Ada in Princess Ida. In the 1913-14 season she added the Bridesmaid in Trial by Jury, and Lady Saphir in Patience (with the departure in March of Anna Bethel).

In 1914-15 she yielded Saphir to Ella Milne, retaining Ada and the Bridesmaid, while making an occasional step-up to the Plaintiff in Trial by Jury. For the next season, she was replaced as Ada by Nell Raymond, appearing again as the Bridesmaid and, for the first time, as Celia in Iolanthe (a role she shared with Phyllis Smith). In July 1916, Ethel Armit was back to the Bridesmaid only (Phyllis Ferguson taking over as Celia). She left the Company in December of that year.
