Brenda Atherton (1968-71)

Mezzo-soprano Brenda Atherton received her musical training at the Royal Manchester College of Music. She joined the DOyly Carte chorus in September 1968 and, during her first two years with the Company, occasionally appeared as Giulia in The Gondoliers (1968-69), Fleta in Iolanthe (1969-70), and Vittoria in The Gondoliers (1969-70).
For the 1970-71 season she assumed the roles of Fleta in Iolanthe, Ada in Princess Ida, Ruth in Ruddigore, and Giulia in The Gondoliers on a regular basis and understudied Kate in The Pirates of Penzance, Lady Saphir in Patience, Melissa in Princess Ida, Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, and Tessa in The Gondoliers. She was married to Peter Fielding, a clarinetist in the DOyly Carte orchestra, and left the Company in August 1971.
