THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Caroline Baker as Kate in The Pirates of Penzance

Caroline Baker (1973-77)

Caroline Baker joined the D’Oyly Carte chorus in March 1973. The following season she assumed the small part of Kate in The Pirates of Penzance, and made occasional appearances a Lady Saphir in Patience, Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, and Vittoria in The Gondoliers. During the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons, she continued to sing Kate in Pirates, while making the odd substitution as Vittoria (both seasons) and Pitti-Sing (1974-75).

For the 1976-77 season, she continued with Kate in Pirates, and added Ada in Princess Ida (when that opera was restored to the repertoire that season), Ruth in Ruddigore (in place of Gillian Burrows, who had left the Company), and Vittoria in The Gondoliers (replacing Patricia Leonard who moved up to Tessa). She again filled in on occasion as Pitti-Sing and, for the first time, as Leila in Iolanthe.  She left the D’Oyly Carte in July 1977, but not before making her only recording with the Company—as Vittoria in The Gondoliers earlier that year.

After leaving the D’Oyly Carte, Miss Baker joined the Welsh National Opera chorus.
