THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Jean Barrington as Patience in Patience

Jean Barrington (1956-59)

[Born Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, died 24 Jun 1982]

Jean Barrington joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company as a chorister in May 1956. She served in that capacity throughout the 1956-57 season, and in July 1957 took over four named parts:Isabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Celia in Iolanthe, Lady Psyche in Princess Ida, and Patience in Patience (succeeding Cynthia Morey in the latter role). In December 1957, with the departure of Maureen Melvin, Miss Barrington gave up Isabel and Celia, and added the Plaintiff in Trial by Jury, Phyllis in Iolanthe, Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Rose Maybud in Ruddigore, and Casilda in The Gondoliers. She yielded the Plaintiff to Jennifer Toye in April 1958 or thereabouts.

For the 1958-59 season, she held down Patience, Phyllis, Psyche, Yum-Yum, and Rose, yielding Casilda to Jennifer Toye. Jean Barrington left the Company July 4, 1959, at the end of the season.
