THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
May Bell as Melene in Utopia Limited |
May Bell (1893)
May Bell was possibly a chorister who first appeared in the Savoy programme in the small role of Nance in Haddon Hall, which she assumed in February 1893 from Nita Cole. She appears to have returned to the chorus in March, when Nance was taken over by Emmie Owen. In May 1893, she created the part of Maud in Jane Annie, taking it on tour when the Savoy closed in July. In October she was back at the Savoy to create the small part of Melene in Utopia (Limited), but yielded the part to Madeleine Galton the following month and left the Company.
Before joining The D'Oyly Carte chorus at the Savoy she was at the Criterion in 1892, appearing (also as a chorister) in works including Gilbert and Grossmith's Haste to the Wedding.
