THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Kay Blake as Gianetta in The Gondoliers |
Kay Blake (1916-18)
[Born 1891]
Kay Blake joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company in July 1916 as a member of the chorus. A year later she succeeded Phyllis Smith (who had left the Company) as Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, Patience in Patience, Princess Ida in Princess Ida, Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard, and Gianetta in The Gondoliers. Her career as principal soprano did not last long. Phyllis Dicksee was brought in to play these roles in December 1917, and Kay Blake was gone the following month.
Miss Blake later performed in pantomome, appearing at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, in 1927.
