Margaret Blythe in Patience |
Margaret Blythe (1937-39)
[Born c.1912, died 17 Jun 2004]
Soprano Margaret Blythe sang in the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus from May 1937 to July 1939. In what appears to have been her only named part with the D'Oyly Carte, she filled in briefly as Fiametta in The Gondoliers in March or April 1938.
Prior to joining the D'Oyly Carte, she appeared as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute at Sadler's Wells on at least one occasion in 1935. She is reported to have sung that part again at Sadler's Wells in 1937, presumably during a break in the D'Oyly Carte schedule.
Miss Blythe later moved to America, where she joined the amateur Savoy Company (Philadelphia) in 1941, taking the role of Yum-Yum in their 1941 production of The Mikado. Between 1945 and 1949 she was principal soprano with the Savoy Company, her roles including Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Phyllis in Iolanthe, and Rose Maybud in Ruddigore.
