THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Arthur Boielle as Sir James Jellicoe in A Princess of Kensington

Arthur Boielle (1898-1903)

[Born Jersey, died Battle 1949]

Arthur Richardson Boielle played the small part of Samuel Spicer in The Vicar of Bray on tour with D'Oyly Carte Company "D" from December 1898 to February 1899. He joined the Savoy chorus at some point in 1899, remaining through The Emerald Isle, April-November 1901. He is reported to have taken a role in the curtain-raiser The Willow Pattern in 1901-02 when it played with Iolanthe. It's unclear whether he was in the chorus for Merrie England in 1902-03, but Boielle created the part of Sir James Jellicoe in A Princess of Kensington when it premiered at the Savoy on January 22, 1903. He remained in the part throughout its run and may have taken it on tour.

In 1905, along with many of the London Savoyards, Boielle migrated to the Lyric Theatre. There he played Cyril and then Colonel Nightingale in the musical comedy The Talk of the Town.
