THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Nelson Brontay (1919-20)

[Born East Dulwich, South London 8 Jan 1885, died Hendon, North London 7 Sep 1962]

Nelson Brontay was the stage name of Frederick Procter Brown. Originally primarily a concert artist, he appeared frequently under his real name throughout England from 1910 through 1917. He joined the D'Oyly Carte "New" Opera Company chorus, as Nelson Brontay, for the 1919-20 season. He performed regularly as Giorgio in The Gondoliers in December 1919, and filled in on occasion as Luiz in that opera.

After leaving the Company, Brontay spent the next decade on the variety and musical comedy stages, including some turns in a variety act with former D'Oyly Carte singer Phyllis Murden.
