THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Mae Bruce (1887)
[Born Salem, Massachusetts 1865]
Mae Bruce (born Mart Abbott Bruce) appeared on tour as Zorah (in April) and Ruth (in May) with D'Oyly Carte's Third American Ruddygore Company in the spring of 1887. Just prior to that engagement she toured with the Moulton & Bennett Company in a comic opera repertoire that included H.M.S. Pinafore (as Josephine) and The Mikado (as Pitti-Sing).
In 1890, as May Bruce, she toured South America with Edwin Cleary's English Comic Opera Company, appearing in Buenas Aires, Argentina, in several roles including Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore, Edith in The Pirates of Penzance, and Peep-Bo in The Mikado. The Company also performed for a few night in Montevideo, Uruguay. She rejoined Cleary for a second, lengthier, South American tour (June 1891-March 1892), adding the Lady Ella in Patience to her roles.
