THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Dorothy Chapman in The Gondoliers |
Dorothy Chapman (1932-35)
Dorothy Chapman appeared from time to time in grand opera at Drury Lane (1918) and Covent Garden (1919-24), most often as a Valkyrie in Wagner's opera. In April 1924 she earned recognition as a coloratura soprano soloist in Signor Gaetano Loria's all-operatic concert at London's Wigmore Hall.
Her first foray into Gilbert & Sullivan may have come in 1930 when she appeared as Casilda in The Gondoliers with the Erith Operatic & Dramatic Society. She later served as a soprano chorister with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company from August 1932 to June 1935. During the Company's 1934 summer vacation, Miss Chapman gave a solo concert recital, broadcast on the Athone & Dublin radio station in Ireland.
