THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Hetty Chapman (1879-81)
[Born London c.1862]
Hetty Chapman's D'Oyly Carte career began as a young chorister at the Opera Comique in H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and Patience. She then went on tour as the Lady Ella with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "D" Company when it was launched on August 1, 1881, with the first provincial production of Patience, but in September she was succeeded in the part by Marion May. Miss Chapman then left the Company to tour in Mascotte with Kate Santley.
She later appeared at the Empire Theatre in the comic opera Dick (1884), at the Coronet Theatre and on tour in the musical farce The Merry-Go-Round (1896), and at the Apollo in the musical comedy Kitty Grey (1901-02). From 1889 onward, however, she enjoyed her greatest success as a music hall vocalist.
