THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Amy Clifford (1875-76)
Amy Clifford succeeded Linda Verner as First Bridesmaid in July 1875 for D'Oyly Carte during the first run of Trial by Jury at the Royalty Theatre, London. She was, presumably, a chorister in La Perichole as well. After October 1875, when Charles Morton succeeded Richard D'Oyly Carte as general manager, Miss Clifford remained in the cast for a few months. But in January 1876, when Trial was moved to the Opera Comique, Carte returned to the Royalty as co-manager, where he presented The Duke's Daughter with Amy Clifford as Hans. The production moved to the Globe on February 2, the Charing Cross on February 21, and closed on March 11, 1876.It was her last engagement under D'Oyly Carte management.
She later toured with Kate Santley's Company in the summer of 1877, appearing in roles including Cathay in W. S. Gilbert and Frederic Clay's Princess Toto.
