Contralto Susan Cochrane was educated at McGill University in Montreal (where she sang in the McGill Savoy Society) and the University of New Brunswick before moving to England in 1971.She completed four years of study at the Royal College of Music in 1976, then traveled to Paris with the 1976 Glyndebourne Spring tour.

She was engaged by D'Oyly Carte Opera Company to sing in the chorus in the fall of 1976, but didn't actually join the Company until May 1977.She remained with the D'Oyly Carte until the Company's Last Night on February 27, 1982. During her final season (September 1981-February 1982) Miss Cochrane filled in on occasion for Roberta Morrell as Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore.
