Paulina Gear (1887)

Paulina Gear succeeded Fanny Edwards as Dame Hannah in Ruddigore on tour with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "C" Company in July 1887. She served until December of that year in what would be her only D'Oyly Carte role.

She would later return to Gilbert & Sullivan in an unusual venue. In 1890 she toured South America as principal contralto with Edwin Cleary's English Comic Opera Company, appearing in Buenas Aires, Argentina, in many roles including Little Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore, Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, and Katisha in The Mikado. The Company also appeared briefly in Montevideo, Uruguay.
