THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
William Gillow (1880, 1882)
William Gillow played Major General Stanley for the third of four D'Oyly Carte American Pirates of Penzance Companies in 1880, replacing Mr. C. Jones in February, shortly into the tour that ran to July. Gillow later appeared as Major Murgatroyd in a non-D'Oyly Carte production of Patience, starring Lillian Russell, at New York's Bijou Opera House (June-July 1882).
Gillow then returned to the D'Oyly Carte in New York, appearing at the Standard Theatre as Nicholas in Bucalossi's Les Manteaux Noirs (September to October 1882), and the Second Lieutenant in Planquette's Rip Van Winkle (October to November 1882). It was his last D'Oyly Carte engagement.
In December 1884 Gillow returned to the Standard in Suppe's A Trip to Africa. He also appeared at the Standard in and English adaptation of Gasparone between February and April 1885. Gillow's next and, it appears, last appearance in Greater New York came in June 1889 when he appeared in Boccacio at the West Brighton Casino.
