Henry Leffler (1891-1902)

[Born North London 6 Jan 1864, died Wandsworth 1944]

Henry Leffler was a tenor chorister and small part player with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company on tour and at the Savoy from some point in 1891 to May 1902. He began on tour with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "B," appearing as Leonard Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard (January-December 1892), Francesco in The Gondoliers (January-June 1892), Lord Dramaleigh in Utopia Limited (February 1894-February 1895), and in a small, but unidentified, part in The Chieftain (February-August 1895). He also filled in on at least one occasion (January 1892) as Indru in The Nautch Girl.

He then transferred to the main company at the Savoy where he served in the chorus at least from November 1895 (revival of The Mikado) through March 1898 (new version of The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein). He would later return to touring, appearing with D'Oyly Carte Opera Company "E" as Nepomus in The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein (December 1898-May 1899), as Leonard Meryll in Yeomen again (briefly, September 1899), and in the chorus through The Emerald Isle (July 1901-May 1902).

Leffler directed Gilbert & Sullivan opera for the Burnley St. Catherine's Operatic Society in the late 1900s. In the 1920s he worked as an operatic coach, and produced light opera for the Lewes Operatic Society.
