THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY
Florence Plowden (1879)
[Born Lyndhurst, Hants. 1851, died St. Leonard's-on-Sea, Sussex 15 Feb 1890]
Miss Florence Plowden (real name Serena Ann Egerton) was engaged briefly by Richard D'Oyly Carte to play Mrs. Leslie in a one-act "comedietta" called The Love Test, which served as curtain raiser for H.M.S. Pinafore with Carte's "Second London" Company on tour in September and October 1879. It was her only experience with the D'Oyly Carte organization. She had earlier created the parts of Ruth, the maid-servant, in W. S. Gilbert's Sweethearts (Prince of Wales's Theatre, November 1874) and the Lady Melusine in Gilbert's fairy play Broken Hearts (Royal Court Theatre, December 1875).
