THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

Paul Presano (1885-87)

[Born London 1863, died 1918]

Paul Presano was born Paul Tacagni. He was a touring chorister in autumn 1885 with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "A" Company performing Princess Ida, and with Carte's "C" Company in Ruddigore during the spring of 1887. His theatrical career, mostly in opera and musical comedy, lasted until at least 1913. In 1891 he married ex-D'Oyly Carte artist Amy Augarde. It was a short-lived arrangement.

He was one of eight siblings who were involved with the D'Oyly Carte organization. His brother Paul toured as a chorister in Princess Ida in 1885 and Ruddigore in 1887; his sister Rita toured in Claude Duval and Patience in 1882; and his sister Maria was a chorister with Carte's "D" Company in 1890. The other four (Rocco, Lozenzo, Anthony, and Benedict) appeared at the Opera Comique or on tour in 1880-81 with the Children's H.M.S. Pinafore Company.
